Question

Calculate the density of a rectangular solid which has a mass of 25.71 g. It is 2.30 cm long. 4.01 cm wide, and 1.82 cm high. A prospector found an irregularly shaped solid inj a creek bed. The solid had a mass of 44.197 g. He placed the solid in a volumetric measuring device containing a liquid. The initial total volume of the liquid was read as 7.30 mL. The solid was completely submerged in the liquid and the total and volume of the liquid and solid was read as 9.59 mL. Calculate the density of the solid. Use a table of densities of densities form your text to identify the solid.

Explanation / Answer

Answer – 3) We are given the, mass = 25.71 g ,

Length = 2.30 cm, width = 4.01cm and height = 1.82 cm

First we need to calculate the volume of the rectangular solid and we know formula,

Volume = long * width * height

             = 2.30 cm * 4.01 cm * 1.82 cm

             = 16.8 cm3

We know the, density formula

Density = mass / volume

              = 25.71 g / 16.8 cm3

              = 1.53 g/mL

4) We are given the mass of solid = 44.197 g , initial volume = 7.30 mL , final volume = 9.59 mL

So, the volume of the solid = 9.59 mL – 7.30 mL

                                            = 2.29 mL

Density of the solid = mass / volume

                                 = 44.197 g / 2.29 mL

                                 = 19.3 g/mL

Form the table we confirmed that solid is Gold.

5) We are given, the pure gold density = 19.3 g/mL , , mass of gold bracelet = 48.2 g ,

Volume = 3.00 mL

So density of the gold bracelet = 48.2 g / 3.00 mL

                                             = 16.1 g/mL

So the bracelet is not pure gold, since the pure gold density is 19.3 g/mL and we found the density of the bracelet is 16.1 g/mL .
