Question

Part A: A sample of ideal gas is in a sealed container. The pressure of the gas is 225 torr , and the temperature is 9 C . If the temperature changes to 89 C with no change in volume or amount of gas, what is the new pressure, P2, of the gas inside the container? Express the pressure numerically in torr.

Part B:

Using the same sample of gas (P1 = 225 torr , T1 = 9 C ), we wish to change the pressure to 2250 torr with no accompanying change in volume or amount of gas. What temperature T2, in Celsius, is needed to reach this pressure? Express the temperature numerically in degrees Celsius.

Explanation / Answer

Part B :

We know that PV = nRT

Where

T = Temperature ;P = pressure ;n = No . of moles ;R = gas constant ;V= Volume of the gas

As volume remains the same & the gas is the same so n also same thereby P is proportional to T

P1 / P2 = T1 / T2

Where

P1 = initial pressure = 225 torr

T1 = initial temperature = 9 oC = 9+273 = 282 K

P2 = final pressure = ?

T2 = final temperature = 89 oC = 89+273 = 362 K

Plug the values we get

P2 = (P1T2)/T1

    = (225x362) / 282

    = 288.8 torr

Part B :

P1 / P2 = T1 / T2

Where

P1 = initial pressure = 225 torr

T1 = initial temperature = 9 oC = 9+273 = 282 K

P2 = final pressure = 2250 torr

T2 = final temperature = ?

Plug the values we get

T2 = (P2T1)/P1

    = (2250x282)/225

    = 2820 K

    = 2820 - 273 oC

    = 2547 oC
