Drganic Chemistry Roberts & Company Publishers presented by Sapling Leaming Marc Loudon For each of the following alcohols, which method of synthesis, (a) hydroboration-oxidation or (b) oxymercuration-reduction, can produce the alcohol relatively free of constitutional isomers and diastereomers? (Drag an alcohol to the appropriate bin ift can be made by that method.) (a) hydroboration-oxidation (b) oxymercuration-reduction OH OH CH3CH2-CH-CH2CH2CH3 OH

Explanation / Answer

Hydroboration - oxidation reaction adds water to alkene according to anti-Markovnikov's rule, however, Oxymeruration - reduction reaction adds water to alkenes according to Markovnikov's rule.

2-methyl cyclopentanol can be produced by Hydroboration-oxidation method (as shown), which followed anit-Markovnikov's rule. If Oxymercuration-reduction reaction is used to add water, then 1-methyl cyclopenatanol is producded. (3rd option in the box)
