Question

Imagine that 1.00 M sodium hydroxide of the beakers in Model I-List the species in each beaker chat would react with this base and neutralize quantities (at least 0.0S mote) of it. If neutralization it not likely to occur, write "none." Imagine that 1.00 M hydrochloric acid was added dropwise to each of the beakers in Model I. List the in each beaker that could react with this acid and neutralize significant quantities (at lew 0.05 mole) of i(. If neutralization it not likely to occur, write "none.' Which beaker in Model I was able to neutralize significant quantities of both acid and base? A buffer solution is one that can neutralize both small quantities of acid and small quantities of base. This is possible because the solution contains both a weak acid and its conjugate base species in equilibrium. By neutralizing any acid or base that is added, the solution can keep a fairly constant pH. Which beaker in Model 1 contains a buffer? One way to make a buffer solution is to mix a weak acid solution with a solution of a salt of its conjugate base, Explain why both the weak acid and the salt of its conjugate (common ion) are required to make a buffer. Circle all the combinations below that would make a buffer solution when mixed in equal volumes. Choose one of the buffers you circled in Question 8 and describe how it would neutralize both acids and bases to keep the pH fairly constant.

Explanation / Answer

To answer from question 3 through 6, I need you to put the model I that is reffering to in here. For now, I will answer question 8, and please, post these questions again (And per separate) in a different question thread with model I. If I don't see model I I cannot choose a beaker to answer those questions.

As it was stated before, the best way to create a buffer is with an acid and salt of that acid, basically because they both have similar properties, and because in solution, both ions of both compounds can mix together and can do a better buffer to neutralize an acid or base.

With this being said, the best way to do a buffer is the following:

- 1 M NH4Cl and 1 M NH3

- 1 M HF and 1 M NaF

These two are the best. It could be done with H2SO4, but this is a strong acid like HCl and HNO3, and therefore, it's dissociation it's almost complete when it's on solution. That's why these buffers can't be done.

Hope this helps
