Question

Remember if the question says "what is the equation for the area of a circle?" Enter pi*r^2 not A=pi*r^2. For frequency write nu For wavelength write lambda. Use RH for the Rydberg constant expressed in energy units (not wavelength), ie., RH = 2.18e-18 J. Use h for Planck's constant andc for the speed of light. Note that 1 divided by b*c should be written 1/(b*c).

(a) What equation gives the energy of the n=5 level of the hydrogen atom?

(b) What is the equation for the frequency of light when the Hydrogen atom makes a transition from n=6 to n=2? Evaluate everything but RH and h

Explanation / Answer

a)

Apply Rydberg equation for n = 5

E = -R*(1/n)^2

R = -2.18 x 10-18J

then

E = -R*(1/n)^2

E = (2.18*10^-18)(1/5^2) =8.712*10^20 J/particle

b)

Apply same equation difference

E = -R*(1/nf^2 - 1/ni^2)

E = (2.18*10^-18)(1/(6^2)-1/(2^2)) = 4.84*10^-19 J/particle

If the constant should not be evaluated, then

E = RH(1/(6^2)-1/(2^2)) = -0.22222RH
