Question
Can someone please help me design a procedure for collecting differing amounts of CO2 gas? Here are the details of the assignment:
Students should design a procedure so that different amount of CO2 gas will be produced and collected. The volumes of CO2 gas are measured, and theoretical yields of CO2 in moles are calculated according to limiting reactants (either NaHCO3 or CH3COOH). Then the volumes of CO2 are plotted on y-axis, and moles of CO2 are plotted on x-axis in Excel. You should calculate the Universal Gas Constant R based on the best-fit-line equation you obtained from Excel.
Important: Just imagine that you were in the same time as Avogadro’s Law and wanted to experimentally measure R and then compare it to the value reported (the one you have from textbook, for example). This should be reflected in your writing formal report.
Available reagents and equipments:
NaHCO3 powder; ~ 0.5 mol/L CH3COOH solution; test tubes; small vials; stopper; tubing; water trough; 250 mL plastic graduate cylinder (provided in lab) or 100 mL graduate cylinder (in student’s drawer); Erlenmeyer flasks with different size. You may use anything in your drawer as well. If you need special equipment not listed here, you may consult your TA.
Explanation / Answer
Please watch this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pKhbY5ocj4g). Now you know experimental set up.Now that guy is reacting Mg with HCl, you will do differentlly, Use Buret for CH3COOH solution and keep NaHCO3 in test tube. Now just open buret and you can control the amount of CH3COOH adding in NaHCO3 so you can control The H2 gas production as you know the volume of test tube( kept in beaker full of H2O so you can easily can know waht is the volume of produced gas.
If you have any further query please leave comment. Thank You.
