Question

Inorganic solids questions. Could someone please show the correct way to do b and or c. thank you!

Sodium crystallizes in body-centered cubic system, and the edge of the unit cell is 430.03 pm. Calculate the dimensions of a cube that would contain one mole of Na. Cesium chloride adopts a simple cubic lattice with chloride ions at the corners. The cell-edge length is 412.31 pm. What is the distance between the centers of the Cs+ and Cl" ions in CsCl? c.Calcium fluoride crystallizes with a cubic lattice. The unit cell has an edge of 546.26 pm and a density of 3.180 g/cm3. How many formula units must there be per unit cell?

Explanation / Answer

b) Given that Cesium crystallizes in cubic lattice .

Edge of unit cell a = 412.31 pm

In cubic lattice,

distance between r+ and r- = r+ + r - = a =  412.31 pm

c)

Given that CaF2 crystallizes in cubic lattice .

Edge of unit cell a = 546.26 pm = 546.26 x 10-10 cm

density = 3.18 g/ cm3

atomic mass of CaF2 = 78 g/mol

density = [M x no of formula units per unit cell] /[ a3 x avogadro number]

3.18 g/cm3 = [ 78 g mol-1 x no of formula units per unit cell ] / [ (546.26 x 10-10 cm)3 x 6.023 x 1023 mol-1]

On simplification,

no of formula units per unit cell = 4
