Question
For these nations India (+ growth), syria (- growth), and Norfolk island( neutral growth):
describe the population conditions in each country. With the description, include a copy of the age distribution ‘pyramid’ for each nation. Also, include population biologists’ projections for the future size of the population.
Next, each of these population patterns have pros and cons. For each nation, indicate the pros of their population profile and also list the cons for the type of profile they possess.
Explanation / Answer
India has higher proportion of people in economically productive age group. The population pyramid has a bulge in the middle. This is known as demographic boon. The advantage of this population structure is that more number of people are available for doing work rather than the dependent population. The disadvantage is that the population will continue to increase which would increase the competition for limited resources.
Syria has a negative population growth mainly because of the effects of war. The disadvantage includes dependency on foreign countries for importation of food and other supplies.
The Norfolk island has neutral population growth. The population pyramid is cylindrical. The advantage is that the population will not increase in the near future and there will not be any stress on available resources. The disadvantage includes higher spending on dependent population
