Explanation / Answer

Bromine water mildly acidic at pH = 6, selectvely oxidizes the aldehyde (-CHO) group to carboxylic acid(-COOH group), but not - CH2OH group. Hence, bromine water oxidizes the above aldose to monocarboxylic acid, called aldonic acid. Dilute nitric acid is a stronger oxidizing agent than bromine water, oxidizes both the - CHO group and the terminal - CH2OH group of the aldose to -COOH groups forming a dicarboxylic acid called as aldaric acid
