Question
In the figure below, m1 = 10.8 kg and m2 = 3.5 kg. The coefficient of static friction between m1 and the horizontal surface is 0.50, and the coefficient of kinetic friction is 0.30.
(a) If the system is released from rest, what will its acceleration be?__m/s^2
(b) If the system is set in motion with m2 moving downward, what will be the acceleration of the system?__m/s^2
In the figure below, m1 = 10.8 kg and m2 = 3.5 kg. The coefficient of static friction between m1 and the horizontal surface is 0.50, and the coefficient of kinetic friction is 0.30. (a) If the system is released from rest, what will its acceleration be?__m/s^2 (b) If the system is set in motion with m2 moving downward, what will be the acceleration of the system?__m/s^2Explanation / Answer
a) first check whether blocks will move or not.
of not move than T = m2g = 3.5g
so friction have to be greater than T.
max. value of stativc friction = u.N = 0.50 x 10.8g = 5.4g thats greater than T ,
so blocks will not movw.
b) now if blocks are moving kinetic friction will act.
3.5g - T =3.5a
T - 0.30 x 10.8g = 10.8a
add them
3.5g - 3.24g = (3.5 + 10.8)a
a = 0.18 m/s2
