Question

Individuals with cystic fibrosis (CF) at two CF centers in South Florida were recruited during routine clinic visits and completed measures of depression (PHQ-9), anxiety (GAD-7), and health-related quality of life (CFQ-R). Additionally, health and demographic data were collected from participants.

Variables:

Physical = Physical Functioning (self-reported on the Cystic Fibrosis Questionnaire - Revised; CFQ-R). Range 0 -100. A higher score indicates better physical functioning (e.g., ability to walk up and down stairs, carry own groceries).

Phq9scorea = Depression Symptoms (Patient Health Questionnaire - 9 Total Score). Range 0 -27. Higher scores indicate higher levels of depression.

Gad7score = Anxiety Symptoms (Generalized Anxiety Disorder - 7 Total Score). Range 0 -21. Higher scores mean higher levels of anxiety.

FEV1_Value% = Measure of lung function (forced expiratory volume in 1 second percent predicted). Higher values indicate better lung function. (For reference: Mild lung disease = > 70%; 40-70% = Moderate disease; <40% = Severe disease).

1. What is the study population?

2. What is the sample?

3. Is the researcher able to generalize the results to make statements about the population? Explain why.

4. Is this type of research: experimental, cross-sectional, or qualitative?

5. State the variable type (nominal, ordinal, interval, ratio) for:

Physical functioning score (physical from CFQ-R)

Depression symptoms (PHQ-9)

Anxiety symptoms (GAD-7)

Explanation / Answer

Q1. The study population is the individuals; with cystic fibrosis (CF) at two CF centers in South Florida who were recruited during routine clinic visits for this research
