Question

Problem 11.29- You attach one end of a string of length ? to a small ball of inertia m. You attach the string's other end to a pivot that allows free revolution. You hold the ball out to the side with the string taut along a horizontal line, as in

Part A

If you release the ball from rest, what is the tension T in the string as a function of the angle ?swept through? Use the notation l for the length of the string ?.

Express your answer in terms of some or all of the variables m, l, ?, and the acceleration due to gravity g.

Part B

What maximum tension should the string be able to sustain if you want it not to break through the ball's entire motion?

Express your answer in terms of some or all of the variables m, l, ?, and the acceleration due to gravity g.

Explanation / Answer

Part A) Let tension T can be resolved into two components

one component is vertical component=m*g*sin(theta)

horizontal componenent is = m*g*cos(theta)

T*sin(theta) = m*g

T = m*g/sin(theta)...........(1)

B) T,max = 3*m*g
