Question

Part A) What must the emf in the figure be in order for the current through 7.00-OHM resistor to be 1.76 A? Each emf source has negligible internal resistance.
Part B) What is the amount of current through the 24.0-V battery?
Part C) What is the amount of current through the 2.0-OHM resistor?
For part A, The answer is 8.05V. I know what the set up looks like, The set up looks like 0 = 24V-((1.76A*7OHM)) - I(3OHM).. but can you please show how to set that up?
I also would like step-by-step instructions on how to set up and solve B and C.

Explanation / Answer

here,

let the current in the 24 V battery be i1

let the current in 2 ohm resistance be i2

curent in 7 ohm resistance is 1.76 A

using KCL in the left smaller loop

E - 2 * i2 + 3 * i1 - 24 = 0 ....(1)

using KCL in the bigger loop

7 * 1.76 + 3 * i1 = 24

i1 = 3.89 A

using KVL

1.76 - i1 - i2 = 0

1.76 - 3.89 - i2 = 0

i2 = 2.13 A

as there is same potential in the parallel

E = 7 * 1.76 - 2 * 2.13

E = 8.05 V

(b)

the amount of current through 24 V battery is 3.89 A

(c)

the amount of current through 2 ohm resistor is 2.13 A
