Sunlight reflects from a concave piece of broken glass, converging to a point 21 cm from the glass. What is the radius of curvature of the glass? An object with a height of 42 cm is placed 1.6 m in front of a concave mirror with a focal length of 0.55 m. Find the location and magnification of the image produced by the mirror, using the mirror and magnification equations. An object with a height of 42 cm is placed 1.7 m in front of a convex mirror with a focal length of -0.52 m. Find the location and magnification of the image produced by the mirror using the mirror and magnification equations. During a daytime football game you notice that a player's reflective helmet forms an image of the Sun 7.5 cm behind the surface of the helmet. What is the radius of curvature of the helmet, assuming it to be roughly spherical?Explanation / Answer
a) focal length f = 21 cm
radius of curvature R = f*2 = 21*2 = 42 cm
b) f = 0.55 m = 55 cm
height h = 42 cm
object distance is do = 1.6 m = 160 cm
using 1/f = 1/do + 1/di
1/55 = (1/160)+(1/di)
image distance is di = 83.8 cm = 0.838 m
magnification m = -di/do = -0.838/1.6 = -0.523
---------------------------------------------------------
c) 1/f = 1/do + 1/di
-1/(0.52) = (1/1.7) + (1/di)
di = -0.398 m
magnification m = -di/do = 0.398/1.7 = 0.234
D) radius of curvature is R = 2*f = 2*7.5 cm = 15 cm
