Question

I have read and reviewed all of the other answers to thisquestion however, none of them seem to be getting the correctanswer? I just need someone that knows what they are doing toatleast get me started. Thank you! CH 16 #28 A small object with a mass of 350 mg carries a charge of30.0nC and is suspended by a thread between the verticle plates ofa parallel plate capacitor. The plates are seperated by 4.00 cm. Ifthe thread makes angle of 15 degrees with the verticle, what is thepotential difference between plates? Explanation / Answer

I am not sure if you figured out your question but just incase. What ZSM 28 was doing was drawing a free body diagram ofthe vertical string. The forces in the y direction areTcos Mg and QE because the Electric field goes in thedirection from the positive plate to the negative plate. The force in the x direction is Tsin. The T's cancel out andyou are left with Tan -Mg-QE =0 It really depends on whatdirection you chose, in other words, you can makeTcos orginally the negative direction, it is up to you, itwill not make any difference. Anyway, your final expressionfor the Electric field will be
E=mgtan/q For the potential, since the Electric field is uniform in aparallel-plate Capacitor, you can use the equation V=Ed subsititue the electric field expression in the above equationand obtain V=mgdtan/d zsm28 had it correct and deserves the karma points. I wasjust ellaborating on what he did so you can understand itbetter.
