Question

An object is thrown vertically up from the ground w/ a speed of 20 m/s, how high will the object be when it stops & starts falling back ( no air friction ) and on its return to its starting point, what will the objects speed be? Already answered~

I have the answer, but the other part of this is What is the time needed to reach maximum height and I am confused because my teacher said the total time in air is 6 seconds ( 3 sec up and 3 sec down ) but I think he said 2 seconds is the time needed to reach maximum height so I am confused please explain!

Explanation / Answer

total time is 2u/g= 2 X 20/ 10
so the total time taken is 4 seconds.. 2 seconds up and 2 seconds down

total height is u2/2g= 400/20=20m.

the speed of the object at the starting point will be same as the initial speed=20m/s
