Question
QUESTIONS On the next page are two graphs showing differences between in the time to death at high temperatures in the four colonies of city ants and the five colonies of country ants (Figure 3A) and time to recovery after cooling at low temperatures (Figure 3B) Angilletta and colleagues used a more sophisticated analysis of these data, but we will use a comparison of the points at which 50% of the population had died (at high temperatures) or recovered (at low temperatures). This measure is called the LDso 100 60 40 20 100 150200250 300350 Time (min) 100 60 40 20 200 400 600 800 1,0001,2001400 Time (sec) Figure 3 (A) Resposse to extreme heat (42 C).(B) Reovery from chaill coma. Blue linesExplanation / Answer
Ans. Cold tolerance is the time required to recover from an exposure to 00 C and is reffered as chill coma recovery. One of the major reason why there was not much difference in the cold tolerance would be as there is an increase in temperatiure overall. The place where the study was carriedout would be warm throughout, as a result of which the ants do not have to build up any sort of cold tolerance. Hence when the ants were subjected to cold conditions they responded somewhat similarly. As the need of heat tolerance is comsidered more important as compared to cold tolerance due to rising temperatures.
