Please i need help with these questions. Becoming a Hit Man, Ken Levi.

BECOMING A HIT MAN . 1. Which of Merton's modes of adaptation would you categorize hit men under? Why? 2. Briefly explain how the differential association theory is present in the article. 3. Being a hit man requires the ability to rationalize a framework for killing. We call this a "neutralization technique". What types of neutralization techniques do we use in our daily deviant behaviors? Use the symbolic interactionist perspective to list three ways we rationalize deviancy by redefining or neutralizing? . 4. In your opinion is becoming a hit man evidence of unsuccessful socialization? Why or why not?

Explanation / Answer

1) 5 modes of adaptation conformation, innovation, ritualism, retreatism, rebellion.

Merton's strain theory has been made in an attempt to explain white collar crime. People turn illegal means to become successful. Also to attain financial goals. They experience strain to anomie which weakens the social control.

2) crime is an learning process that can affect any individual in any culture. criminal behaviour is learned from intimate personal groups. The specific direction of motives and drives is learned from definitions of legal codes as favorable or unfavorable. A person becomes deliquent because of an access of definitions favorable for breaking the law . Differential associations may vary in frequency, duration, priority and intensity. Criminal behaviour is an expression of general needs and values, it is not explained by those needs and values since noncriminal behaviour is an example of the same needs and values.

3) Neytralization is a technique that people use to justify their criminal act. The more someone justifies their action the easier it will be to commit the same act again and they may get more involved in serious acts.

There are 5 basic techniques of justification

Denial of responsibility

This is when a juveniile performs a crime and blames it upon siblings or friends.

Denial of injury

Someone was driving a car. He/she due to negligence got a speeding ticket or met an accident where the car got damaged but noone got hurt. He/she makes it up saying that the car insurance will cover it or everyone gets a speeding ticket at some point of their life.

Denial of the victim

Where the person believes the victim deserved what he/she got.

Condemnation of the condemners

Where the person believes people who condemned him/her is also subjected to complains.

Appeal to higher loyalities

Complaining to someone superior or making a group of friends.

4) Unsuccessful socialization is a key principle in manufacturing criminal motivations. Mixing with odd/ criminal minded people who seem to be "cool" or people in a mission and regular non criminal people are not for greater good and boring. The more such ideologies encapsulate one's mind the more he becomes criminal minded.
