Question

Two balls of equal mass (0.70 kg ) approach the origin along the positive - and -axes at the same speed (3.5 m/s ).

What is the magnitude of the total momentum of the system after both balls have passed through the origin?

What is the direction of the total momentum of the system after both balls have passed through the origin?

I was able to figure out the magnitude and total direction of the entire system, but I am so confused by what/how to find the values when the balls passed through the origin.

Thank You

Explanation / Answer

velocity after crossing origin

3.5i and -3.5i m/s

total momentum = mv+mv

= m*3.5i - m*3.5i

= 0

b.) since it has 0 magnitude so no point of direction.
