Question

A rectangular beam with a cross-section of 5.5 inches by 0.75 inches high. This is used in a pallet as a two-span beam with length L=17.75 inches (see Deflection handout). The board in question carries a uniform load of 35 lb/inch and each support has a contact area of 1.5 inches with the stringer. The bending strength is 2800 psi, shear strength is 150 psi, compression perp to grain is 2400 psi and the deflection limit is L/240. Determine if this deckboard can carry the load.

I believe this is the correct diagram for the type of problem, but I'm not fully sure.

Simple Beam - Uniformly Distributed Load WL 5wL4 max 384EI A, Occurs at center

Explanation / Answer

THE SHEAR FORCE AND BENDING MOMENT DIAGRAM IS CORRECT.AS YOU CAN SEE SHEAR FORCE IS ZERO AT THE CENTRE,SO BENDING MOMENT IS MAXIMUM AT THAT POINT.YES THIS DECKBOARD WILL CARRY THE LOAD.
