Question

In the figure below(Figure 1) , each capacitor has C = 4.20?F and Vab=28.5V.

Calculate the charge on each capacitor.

Calculate the potential difference across each capacitor.

I'm really having a hard time understanding this problem and it wants the answers in ascending order. I can't figure out if that means by the picture or by the numbers.

Explanation / Answer

net capacitance of the loop = C/2 + C = 3C/2

Now,

voltage across loop, V = C/(3C/2 + C)*V = 2V/5

Voltage across the Capacitor in down side wire = 3C/2/(C + 3C/2) = 3V/5

then,

VC1 = 2V/5*(1/2) = V/5 = 5.7V

QC1 = V/5*C = 5.7*4.2*10-6 = 23.94 micro C

VC2 is same as VC1

QC2 is also same

VC3 = 2V/5 = 11.4V

QC3 = 11.4*4.2*10-6 = 47.88 uC

VC4 = 3V/5 = 17.1V

QC4 = 17.1*4.2*10-6 = 71.82 uC

C1 is uppermost capacitor in left, C2 is upper most capcitor in right, C3 in bottom and C4 in lowest side
