Question

Consider the circuit shown in the figure. The multi-meterMis a multi-mode measuring instrument capable to measure either voltage or current depending on its mode switch.

A) What is the magnitude of the voltage shown by the multi-meter, when it is set in the voltmeter mode. Use the following data: ? = 18.0, R1= 13.7 ohms, R2= 38.3 ohms, R3= 37.6 ohms, R4= 15.1 ohms.

*Answer = 8.1 V*

B)What is the magnitude of the current shown by the multi-meter, when it is set in the ammeter mode.

***NEED HELP WITH PART B ONLY*** PLEASE EXPLAIN!!

Explanation / Answer

Part a)

= 18.0, R1= 13.7 ohms, R2= 38.3 ohms, R3= 37.6 ohms, R4= 15.1 ohms.

Req = (1/(R1+R2)+1/(R3+R4))-1

Req = (1/(13.7+38.3)+1/(37.6+15.1))-1

Req = 26.174 ohms

i = /Req = 18/26.174 = 0.68771 A

i1 = Req/(R1+R2) * i = 26.174/(13.7+38.3) * 0.68771 = 0.34616

V1 = 18 - 0.34616 * 38.3 = 4.742072 V

i3 = 0.68771 - 0.34616 = 0.34155 A

V3 = 18 - 0.34155 * 15.1 = 12.842595 V

V = 12.842595 - 4.742072 = 8.1 V
