Question

Consider the circuit shown in the figure(Figure 1) Suppose the four resistors in this circuit have the values R_1 = 13 ohm, R_2 = 6.2 ohm, R_3 = 6.3 ohm, and R_4 = 15 ohm, and that the emf of the battery is epsilon = 18 V Find the current through each resistor using the rules for series and parallel resistors Express your answers using two significant figures separated by commas. Find the current through each resistor using Kirchhoff's rules Express your answers using two significant figures separated by commas.

Explanation / Answer

15 and 6.2 ohm are in series

R = 21.2 ohm

21.2 and 6.3 are parallel.

Rp = 4.85 ohm

this is in series with 13 ohm

So Req = 17.85 ohm

total current in circuit,

i = 18 / 17.85 = 1.008 A

i1 = 1.008 A

potential drop across R1 = 1.008*13 = 13.1 V

so potential drop across R2, R3 , R4 = 18 - 13.1 = 4.89 V

current through R3 is

i3 = 4.89 / 6.3 = 0.776 A

i2 = i4 = 1.008 - 0.776 = 0.232 A

so, i1 , i2 , i3 , i4 = 1.008 , 0.232 , 0.776 , 0.232 A)
