Question
Please, only serious answers, and don't forget the explaining part. Thanks. An accelerating voltage of 2.52 x 10^3 V is applied to an electron gun, producing a beam of electrons originally traveling horizontally north in vacuum toward the center of a viewing screen 35.7 cm away. (a) What is the magnitude of the deflection on the screen caused by the Earth's gravitational field (in m)? m (b) What is the magnitude of the deflection on the screen caused by the vertical component of the Earth's magnetic field, taken as 20.0Explanation / Answer
a) the electron beam is uneffected by gravity.
b) in the earth's magnetic field the beam deflects in a circular path of
radius r, given as r = square root of ( 2 V ) / B x square root of (e/m)
= (2*2.52*10^3) / 20x10^-6(1.76x10^11)^1/2
= 8.46 cm
