Question

If you could shine very powerful flishlight beam toward the Moon, estimate the diameter of the beam when it reaches the Moon. Assume that the beam leaves the flashlight through a 5.0-cm aperture, that its white light has an average wavelenth of 550 nm, and the that the beam spreads due to diffraction only. The ddistance from the Earth tot the Moon is 384 X 10^3 km. Express your anser to two sig figs and include that appropriate units. Explanation / Answer

Use the equation x= (n*?*L)/d

here n=1

?= 550nm

L=3.84e8 m

d= 0.05 m

So x= (1*550e-9*3.84e8)/0.05 = 4224 m

but you have to multiple by 2 because you want to total width of the beam, so the answer is 8448 m
