Question

Colligative Properties Determine the greater quantity in each case: lve one gram of each- 2) In the solutions made above, which solution has the larger change 3) You have two solutions of equal Molar concentrations: one containing sucrose in equal amounts of water. Which solution has a higher vapor pressure? freezing point? C1atH2Ont) and the other containing salt NacD. Which would have a higher osmotic in its boiling point and pressure? 'You can assume that the pairs of solutions in each question are at the same temperature.

Explanation / Answer

Ans:-

1) substance A has higher vapour pressure , because relative lowering in vapour pressure is a collegative property and colligative property is inversely proportional to the molecular mass .

2) Elevation in boiling point is a colligative property therefore subatance B has larger change in boiling point than substance A because its molecular mass is less

3) NaCl solution have more osmotic pressure because osmotic pressure i.e = iCRT.

i = Vant's Hoff factot

C = concentration

R = gas constant

T = temperature

NaCl is a strong electrolyte , therefore it will give two ions in solution i.e Na^+ and Cl^- . Hence i( NaCl) = 2.

While C12H22O11 is a non-electrolyte , therefore its vant hoff factor for it is equal to 1.
