Changes in river channel width and sinuosity
The characteristics of a river channel also change in map view in different portions of the river’s longitudinal profile. These characteristics include the width of the river channel and the sinuosity a measure of the curviness of the river. Figures 7A, 7B, and 7C show satellite images of the river channels at each of the sites analyzed above. The images are all at a scale of 1:300,000 (1 cm = 3 km) such that map distances in km may be measured by multiplying the distance in cm measured on a ruler by 3. For the Yellowstone NP site (Figure 7A), the measurements have already been done for you.
On Figures 7B and 7C, measure the maximum width of the river channel to the nearest 0.1 km. Enter your results in Table 7.
Measure the length of the dashed red line on Figures 7B and 7C. Enter this straight line distance in Table 7
Draw a curve down the center of each river channel between the endpoints of the dashed red lines on Figure 7. With a ruler, carefully measure the total length of the curve and calculate the channel length. Enter your results in Table 7.
The sinuosity is a measure of the curviness of the river. It is calculated by dividing the channel length by the straight line distance. Calculate the sinuosity for each of the 3 locations and enter your results in Table 7
