For your selection, write in response to the following criterion ..

1) If you were a new settler, how would you have assessed on which of the regions to settle in? Consider both economic opportuntiy as well as quuality of life issues.

MOTIVES FOR SETTLEMENT IN CHESAPEAKE.

• Commercial and profit.

ECONOMIC SYSTEM IN CHESAPEAKE.

• Commercial farming and tobacco, cultivation and the plantation system.

• Very happy tobacco industry which brought in rare need for slaves.

• In 1600s indentured servants were being replaced by black slaves.

THE ECONOMY OF CHESAPEAKE

Region was strongly farming based, they had great soil and climate that was perfect for farming.

SETTLER DEMOGRAPHICS IN CHESAPEAKE.

• Young, single men, few women/ families, indentured servants and later African slaves.

• In 1650 men outnumbered women 6 to 1.

• In 1670 black slaves made up 7% of the population.

SOCIAL PATTERN IN CHESAPEAKE.

• Many lower class workers. Small families, plantation aristocracy held disproportionate social and political power to its number.

POLITICAL STRUCTURE IN CHESAPEAKE.

The planter aristocracy held power/representative assembly, the house of Burgesses in 1619.

Free labor, indentured servitude slavery.

• Most importantly religions, but also some commercial.

• Self sufficient farms selling extras to the market. Soil used for live stock, small lumber, fish and commercial ventures.

• Pastures instead of farms

• Fishing and ship building

• couldn't grow crops

The New England economy couldn't be based on agriculture like chesapeake because of poor Rocky soil. They relied on their forest and waters. Carving out a fishing and shipping them. Slavery practices died out quickly as there were no need.

SOCIAL PATTERN IN NEW ENGLAND.

•No great gap between rich and poor.

•widows could inherit property.

• A slow start for women's rights.

POLITICAL STRUCTURE IN NEW ENGLAND.

A religious hierarchy, with the general court as an assembly. Town meeting exercised power on the local level.

LABOR SYSTEM IN NEW ENGLAND .

Free labor, indentured servitude, some slavery but not a lot.
