Question

Please help, and explain.

Of the 61 surveys that you have received, you also note that 37 students are female. You calculate the HOS scores of male and female students, and find that HOS scores of the females have an x = 40.11 and s = 19.40 while the males have a x = 45.17, s = 19.81. Give a 90% confidence interval for the difference in HOS scores between the males and females. Do you have enough evidence to suggest that male and female UIC students have different HOS orientations? Use a significance level of .10 and make sure to show all of your steps. Be sure to explain why you reached your conclusion. Now suppose that you wanted to also know about circumstances where humor might be considered inappropriate, so you also asked the students whether they had ever used humor when communicating with their family doctor. Thirty-five students responded yes. Based on the data from your study, give a 95% confidence interval for the proportion of UIC students who have used humor in communicating with their family doctor.

Explanation / Answer

3.

Sp^2= (n1-1)S1^2+(n2-1)S2^2/(n1-1)+(n2-1)

         = (37-1)*19.40^2+(24-1)*19.81^2/36+23

         = 382.626954237288

tSTAT=(X1-X2)-(µ1-µ2)/Sp^2(1/n1+1/n2)

       =(40.11-45.17)-0/382.63(1/37+1/24)

       =-0.9869708

Confidence interval:-

(X1-X2)+-ta/2*Sp^2(1/n1+1/n2)

-5.06+-1.67*5.1267981

LCL=-5.06-8.56=-13.62

UCL=-5.06+8.56=3.50

(-13.62,3.5)
