Question

I only need b and c

3. The diastolic blood pressure of a population of 35-44 years-old males is normally distributed with a mean of 80 mm Hg and standard deviation of 12 mm Hg. (a) Find the probability that a randomly selected individual will have diastolic blood pressure (i) below 70 (ii) above 85 (iii) between 90 and 95 (v) that differs from the mean by more than 24 (iv) within 16 of the mean ) Above what level do the top 10% of the blood pressure levels in the population fall? (c) Within what range do the middle 10% of the blood pressure levels fall?

Explanation / Answer

b) z score corresponding to top 10% of the area = 1.28

Hence,

Level above which 10% of blood pressure levels fall = 80 + 1.28*12 = 95.36 mm Hg

c) z scores which corresponds to middle 10% of the area = -0.13, 0.13

Hence,

Range in which middle 10% of blood pressure levels fall

= (80 - 0.13*12) to (80 + 0.13*12)

= 78.44 to 81.56 mm Hg
