Question
Please answer in details showing the work.
The Human Resource Office of an Organization processes payroll in three steps: time sheet submission, time sheet approval, payment authorization. All three steps must function properly for an employee to be paid on time. The first step is completed promptly 99% of the time, the second 90% of the time, and third 67% of the time. a. Compute the reliability of the payroll system - i.e. determine the likelihood that employees will be paid on time. A backup group of human resource officials who are equal in performance to the first will be added to help ensure timely payment. The backup group will be alerted prom ptly 90% of the time if the first payroll system does not complete their tasks promptly. What is the reliability now that employees will be paid on time? Show your calculations. b.Explanation / Answer
a)
Reliability of first step, R1 = 0.99
Reliability of second step, R2 = 0.90
Reliability of third step, R3 = 0.67
Reliability of the payroll system = R1 * R2 * R3 = 0.99*0.9*0.67 = 0.597
Likelihood that the employees will be paid on time = 0.597 or 59.7 %
b) Relaibility of the second group is equal to the first (S1), i.e. 0.597
The reliability of the alert mechanism is 90% or 0.90
Therefore, effective reliability of the second group, S2 = 0.597*0.9 = 0.5373
Now, first and second group with alert mechanism form a parallel system
Reliability that the employees will be paid on time = 1 - (1-S1)(1-S2) = 1 - (1-0.597)*(1-0.5373) = 0.8135
