Textile & Clothing(T&C) created good opportunity as entry level job for unskilled laboor in developing country. T&C has has important role for economic development of developing country. T&C has provided large numbers of jobs where people from rural side of the country can earn good amoutn of money and support their family.
On 24th April 2013 in Dhaka District five story building named Rana Plaza collapsed. More than 1000 people where dead and approx. 2000 people where injured people rescued from building. The building contained banks, clothing factories, other shops. As bank and shops were on the lower floor it was immediately closed after cracks were discovered in building. The building owner ignored warning of not using the building given previous day of incident happened, garment worker instructed to come on regular timing as they used to come.
The garment factories in Rana Plaza used to produced clothing for western supplier such as Joe Fresh. The larger issue created after the incident stating low- wage employee of developing country producing goods for richer one, but I think this is completely beneficial relationship for both the countries. I agree there might be low wages but it is surely better than other alternative.
When any customer buy a cloth from companies like Joe Fresh it is actually giving benefit to such developing country by providing more jobs so they can also level up their living standards.
When consumers of Joe Fresh learned company's involvement of such incident they were shocked, as they had very strong relation with the brand and such incident was not expected.
Initial consumer reaction if any such incident happens was to boycott the brand but it can be changed by seeing what measures are taken by Loblaw (Parent company of Joe Fresh) to rectify the situation.
It did look like Loblaw has taken considerable action by sending executives to bangladesh to check the working enviorment and making plans how to avoid such kind of incident in future. These small things consumer takes into consideration, they notice Loblaw is taking the responsibility of such kind of things will not occur in future by taking considerable action.
In past decade bangladesh share of producing cheap clothing is huge. In 2009 exported good of around $15 billion, but in 2013 it is doubled i.e. $31 billion in just 4 years and about 90% of it from cloths.
Bangladesh came to this position because of lack of regulation and low wages paid to worker. Bangladesh's minimum wages is worlds one of the lowest. As Clothing brands want to cut the cost due to competition and wages in china started increasing, there fore bangladesh becomes brands first choice for cheap goods.
It is found that many top executives of clothing brand planning to reduce to reduce sourcing from china and they will start sourcing from china as they can cut down the cost of final goodsin the competitive enviornment.
In past decade wokers actually saw their wages are decreasing, but in china it was increasing. Look into below table of monthly wages of workers of both the countries.
If Joe Fresh starts sourcing from European country or other there cost of making goods increases to stand out in such competitve worldit is necessary to opt for solution which is viable in this case sourcing from Bangladesh as cost of production goes down drastically and evetually it will be beneficial for everyone, customer can buy good quality cloths at low cost, Large numbers of jobs are produced in such country and brand can also profit whch is not as high as they used to earn early.
