Question

Reply to this thread please. From what I read in the article and the textbook, short term working memory is a stage of memory that temporarily maintains and processes a limited amount of information. I disagree with the authors' results saying that athletes who play football and volleyball score higher on working memory tests. I disagree because, there are other sports that can impose significant working memory loading like soccer, basketball, softball, or tennis. I believe that these sports also can achieve a higher score on the working memory test like the AOSPAN. You can get a concussion in soccer just like the article stated and you can get a concussion in basketball too if you hit the floor hard or get hit in the head with the basketball. Softball too can result to concussions, same with tennis. Concussion, or not I believe that these other sports can achievea higher score than football or volleyball on working memory tests like the AOSPAN. Some ways that I think can strengthen short-term working memory are writing down stuff you have to do, for example an assignment. Another way is to say what you have to do over and over in your head or out loud until you remember what you have to do. One more way to strengthen short erm working memory that I think is useful is to hit different parts of your body to indicate that you need to do this, for example hitting your arm to remind you that you have a doctor's appointment. Over all, I thought this article was very interesting and informative. I use all the strategies listed whenever I need to remind myself that I have an assignment due, or a meeting to go to. My family and friends are always impressed that I remember almost everything from what we need at the grocery store, people's birthdays, and past events. I honestly do not know why or how I remember those things, I just do.

Explanation / Answer

Memory is the part of cognition and the cognition begins from sensation and perception. When someone says that they have good memory or bad memory, both things are related to cognition.

Memory divided into three parts and each part have different characteristic, immediate memory or sensory memory is the part of sensation and in this part of memory a good sensation make effects for storage, short term memory is a part of memory which store data for 20-30 seconds. If someone have good STM he can be manipulate the information easily. The final aspect of memory is LTM or long term memory, this memory connects with STM and emotions, if information belong to us and influence our emotions, it goes to LTM and store up to life time.

Playing different kind of sports do not effects memory more over the sensations and emotions. People generally can or can’t remind dates, names, facts or experiences, all things are related to good cognition.

All memory test measures the capacity of storage and memory rather than sensation and perception so that this not possible to verify, which facts will be learn.
