Screen 5: Although there are clear signs of aging in the brain during middle adulthood, these changes do not seem to be associated with a drop in the quality of life at home or on the job. Some of the brain changes, such as the reduction in the number of synapses (gray matter), are part of an overall process of “fine-tuning” of the neural circuits. This fine-tuning leads to more efficient information processing. There are many factors affecting a person’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. These factors include general health, knowledge and expertise, and motivation to perform. Researchers have much to learn about how health, experiential, and motivational factors interact with age-related brain changes in middle adulthood. Play the animation to watch again some of the brain changes that occur during the middle adult years.

Question:

Consider the theory that you proposed on screen 5 for how brain development in middle adulthood can affect a person’s life. Explain how accurate your theory may or may not have been based on what you learned in the rest of the activity.

Answer feedback:

Middle adulthood is a time when people describe improvement in many areas of life — greater knowledge, better relationships, more satisfying careers, or newfound leisure activities. During this age, there are signs of senescence in the brain, including the thinning of gray and white matter. However, the reduction in the number of synapses (in gray matter) acts to fine-tuning the neural circuits. This fine tuning may lead to a greater efficiency in information processing, and this may explain some of the improvements described by those between ages 30 and 65.

Information: We have reviewed how aging affects the body, but we have not explored how aging affects the brain and cognitive ability. Research points to the greatest age-related changes in memory and attention. Like other organs and structures, the brain does change as the result of decreased blood flow as we age. Also like other organs and structures, how the brain function changes with age differs in every individual. While there is cognitive decline in age, it is not as pessimistic as it sounds as the brain is a very flexible organ that can be trained and “exercised” even in old age. Research into how the brain ages contributes to a better understanding of how to keep the brain active and high-functioning well into late adulthood.

Question: According to this video clip, what did the experiment show? According to the researcher, what do the findings mean for older adults? With this information, what advice might you give to an older adult that you care about to help him/her stay mentally active?

Answer feedback: The experiment demonstrates that older adults have a harder time multitasking than younger adults do. Older adults had difficulty memorizing a word list while walking. The researcher suggests that older adults tend to focus their mental resources on the more high priority task (walking) over a lower priority task (memorizing). Perhaps, tell your older loved one not to be anxious about age-related attention and memory changes. The changes are real but relatively mild in affecting overall health and happiness. Compensate for the changes by writing things down or concentrating on only one thing when wanting to remember or learn something. The brain still works extremely well in old age, so healthy older folks should not be afraid to use it.

Middle adulthood is one of the most fulfilling periods in one’s life. One finds out their identity, completes their education, gets a job and steadies their career and forms their family with children. The reverse may be also true that people might get disappointed the other way round. When one is active, one’s brain growing thus making more connections. This helps one become sharper in terms of making decisions, handling emotions and maintaining relationship. It’s also important that people during this age work hard maintain their integrity and strive hard to achieve more otherwise, people will lose the brain connections and become worse. So, in my opinion, it all depends on the individuals and how well they do in terms their work, relationship and emotions.
