Question

Please explain how you got to the answers!

1)VO2 = 25.34 ml O2/kg/min, HR = 135 beats/min, stroke volume = 97 ml blood/beat, body mass = 62 kg. Solve for the a-vO2 difference and venous O2 content (ml O2/100 ml blood).

2)VO2 = 2925 ml O2/min, HR = 150 beats/min, a-vO2 difference = 13 ml O2/100 ml blood

Solve for the stroke volume (ml blood/beat).

3) Maximal VO2 = 5780 ml O2/min, venous O2 content = 2 ml O2/100 ml blood, body mass = 72 kg, Age = 43 years, Sex= Female. Solve for a) the cardiac output (L/min) and VO2 (ml O2/kg/min).

Explanation / Answer

1. Given,

VO2=25.34ml O2/kg/min, HR=135 beats/ min, stroke volume=97ml blood/ beat, body mass=62kg.

According to equation,

a-VO2 difference=62-25.34=36.66 ml O2/ min.

venous O2 content= Q(a-VO2 difference)10

=2.38(36.66)10=8.72ml O2/100ml of blood

2.Stroke volume=0.004VO2+0.603

=12.303 ml blood/beat

3.Cardiac output= stroke volumeXheart rate=12.303×150

=1845.45 l/ min.

VO2= Q(a-VO2 diff)10

=18.45ml(72-2925)10

=526.3ml O2/kg/min.
