Question

Philosophy- Critical Thinking

When a pregnant woman drinks alcohol, the neurons developing in the fetal brain are unable to connect the way they should while the alcohol is present. Scientists predict that ,eventually, they wilbe able to identify the exact moment in the fetus' growth that a mother had an alcoholic drink by identifying which neurons are incorrectly developed. Is alcohol a necessary or sufficient condition for neural damage in a fetus? Give an argument for your answer.

This argument should be about necessary or sufficient conditions.

Thanks!

Explanation / Answer

Drinking is not the only cause for the neural damage in a fetus, though it necessarily contributes to the condition for neural damage in a fetus.Though it is a necessary condition for the damage but it alone is not sufficient for the damage. The factors as chain smoking, poverty, malnutrition, high parity and advanced maternal age along with alcoholism leads to such damage in fetus .
