Conformity and Attitude Change We know from several studies on group conformity, that certain factors can increase the chance that others will conform to a group norm. We also know that our actions can cause us to reconsider our attitudes via cognitive dissonance. In this lab, your goal is to see whether you can change a person's attitude about a topic by inducing a dissonant behavior through normative influence. Research question: Can a person's attitude about a topic be changed by inducing a dissonant behavior through normative influence. 1. a.) For this research, operationally define dissonant behavior and normative influence. b.) How many conditions will you have? c.) What is your independent variable? d.) Dissonant behaviour : It is the one where the individuals have attitudes which are conflict in nature . The behaviour and beliefs also something which is not matching with the norms of society is called dissonant behaviour. Eg: A person knowing smoking is injurious to health and causes cancer . The person who still have it knowing the cause and effect of it .
Normative influence :It is a way, when people conforms the other set of people with theri beliefs ,attitude, way of thinking etc which should be liked by them .
Dependent variable : Person's attitude .
Independent variable : Group Conformity . That is something we do not have any control.
Schedule an interview for a set of people would help to know about the person's attitude towards group conformity.
To know about the problem more specifically , the data needs to deal with huge set of population .
Subsetting the sample / group of population could help to come up with results in a better way .
