Explanation / Answer

Motor Unit recruitment - it is known as the activation of additional motor units to accomplish an increase in contractile strength in a muscle. Muscle recruitment can be determined through EMG. The higher the recruitment more stronger the muscle contracts and suggests of more muscle work.

push up - Push-ups exercise make use of the pectoral muscles, triceps, and anterior deltoids, serratus anterior, coracobrachialis and the midsection as a whole.

Work of triceps - triceps work to extend the elbow joint to straighten the arm during pushing up phase and also controls the elbow joint flexion speed during going down phase.

Work of biceps - during push up, biceps helps in shoulder and elbow joint stabilization.

from above EMG readings it is seen that average recruitment for biceps is 0.013 with 0.005 standard deviation and 0.003 mean.

EMG recordings for triceps suggests recruitment of 0.086 with deviation of 0.02 and mean of 0.014.

the average recruitment of biceps and triceps show higher recruitment for triceps muscle. this shows that triceps are doing greater work than biceps during push up.

Gastrocnemeus muscle forms half of the calf muscle of lower leg. it helps in plantar flexing the foot at ankle joint.

the recruitment of gastrocnemeus during plantar flexion is 0.026 with 0 standard deviation and 0 mean.

The recruitment of gastrocnemeus during reflex is 0.003 with standard deviation of 0.001 and mean of 0.0006.

So the recruitment of gastrocnemeus muscle during plantar flexion is greater than reflex recruitment. this clearly suggests that work of gastrocnemeus during plantar flexion is greater than during reflex.
