Essentially there are two types of muscles:

1) Smooth muscles : these muscles are present in the heart, gastro intestinal tract, respiratory system and are under involuntary control i.e. they regulate activities like heart beat/heart pumping, movements in the GI tracts, expansion and contraction of intercostal muscles

2) skeletal muscles: they are innervated by motor neurons and are responsible for voluntary functions like walking, lifting etc.
