Question

Can someone please help me answer the following questions. Please do not attempt to do unless you can answer all of them. Thank you.

1. Explain how the respiratory and urinary systems act to correct acid-base disturbances.

2. What is the difference between alkalosis and acidosis? Respiratory vs. Metabolic?

3. List some disorders and diseases which can cause metabolic aidosis, explain their mechanisms.

4. List some disorders and diseases which can cause metabolic alkalosis, explain their mechanisms.

Explanation / Answer

Answers -

1. ACID-BASE CORRECTION -

- Respiratory - when imbalance occurs at respiratory level it send signals to arterial & CSF chemoreceptors which further increases respiratory rate and decrease PCO3 in blood. And send signals to renal receptors.

- Renal- In renal system renal compensation occurs which leads to H+ secretion & HCO3 generation. To prepare a buffer like condition and then carbonic acid bicarbonate system accepts H+ ions to restore the homeiostasis. Hence ACID-BASE is balanced.

2. Different between

Alkalosis - turining of blood ph towards base in nature.

Acidosis - turning of blood pb acidic in nature.

Respiratory- when respiratory system in involved.

Metabolic or renal - when kidney is involved.

3. Diarrhea can cause metabolic acidosis because it dispose off maximum amount of water, minerals, Salts & necessary nutrients from body and leads to acid base imbalance.

4.Sever Vomiting can lead to metabolic alkalosis because the other two conditions occur due to this are hypokalaemia & hyponatremia that is excessive loss of potassium & sodium. Which lead to imbalance buffer conditions and excess HCO3 accumulation in blood.
