Please chose the correct answer and explain why, thank you.

Given the following initial conditions, in which system will diffusion be from right to left at the greatest rate? A) 0.5 M Na+ on left, 0.3 M Na+ on the right B) 0.3 M Na+ on left; 0.5 M Na+ on the right C) 0.3 M Na+ on left, 0.7 M Na+ on the right D) 0.7 M Na+ on left; 0.3 M Na+ on the right Given the following initial conditions, in which system will diffusion be from right to left at the greatest rate? A) 0.5 M Glucose on left; 0.3 M Glucose on the right B) 0.3 M Glucose on left; 0.5 M Glucose on the right C) 0.3 M Na+ on left; 0.5 M Na+ on the right D) 0.5 M Na+ on left; 0.3 M Na+ on the right

Explanation / Answer

concentration separated by a semipermeable membrane

The rate of diffusion will be more when the osmotic pressure gradient is more.

Osmotic pressure = iRT

Where,

i = number of ions created by dissociation of solute molecules

R = ideal gas constant

T = absolute temperature in K

C = molar or molal concentration

   All the options have same solute I.e Na+

   Solvent is more in concentration in right side (less osmotic pressure on right side)

Hence diffusion will be from right to left.

   Glucose has more molecular wt. hence more osmotic pressure than same molarity of Na+.

Rest is same.
