Question:-

1c) You are a supervisor of a small team. One of your team members, Mary, appears tired and worried when she comes to work and this appears to be affecting her motivation; specifically her job performance and relationships with her team.
In your informal one-on-one discussion with her, you find out that as the mother of 2 small children, Mary struggles to make ends meet due to her low wage as a cleaner. After paying rent and child care expenses, she often does not have enough money left at the end of the month to pay the utilities bill. This has resulted in her family often having the electricity and water supply cut off.

Examine the passage above and identify with explanations which one of the components of Maslow's Need Hierarchy may is most struggling to meet. Explain why this is affecting her motivation at work.

d) There are many factors that influence employee motivation that goes beyond monetary rewards. In light of the above, compare and contrast McClelland's Need Theory with Maslow's Need Hierarchy

Explanation / Answer

1c)She is obviosly struggling to meet the safety and security needs due to lack of money. After taking care of the child expenses, she doesnt have any money left to pay for her utilities, which is effecting her job performance. Basic security needs include financial stability and security to be able to live a good life, which is clearly not being met in Mary's case.Having a savings account, company providing some insurances etc. are all a part of safety and security needs. If these needs are not met the person would not be motivated enough to work on their job since when the person is not getting enough money paid for their work, they will lack motivation. d)Both theories in a way focus on  what employees generally need and want in order to achieve a better work environment (high morale and productivity). Apart from monetary incentives, people do want good working enviorment, challenging jobbs and appreciation for their work to be motivated on their job. Only monetary rewards dont work, the need to be intrinsically motivated and having the feeling of being appreciated and being recognized by their superiors for one's hard work makes the person feel valuable and motivated to perform even better on their job and also be satisified with it. Maslow's social needs of being accepted and feeling belonged to the organzation and McClelland's need for affiliation clearly explains the intrinsic motivation.
