Kenya was riddled with conflict and violence after the general elections. This conflict arose when a presidential candidate, Raila Odinga claimed that there was rigging of votes after Mwai Kibaki was announced, president. This led to a genesis of violence and clashes by citizens, probably Raila’s supporters because of not being satisfied that the elections were free and fair.
This conflict involved two parties, the electoral commission and Raila. Raila claimed that the elections were not free and fair. Kibaki the elected president at that moment. At this period of time, constitution progressively lacked a healthy checks and balances system between the executive, legislative and judicial branches of government. As a result of broad powers, the presidential office was equivalent to a dictatorship which gave the president ability to abuse power. The two parties were aimed at solving a conflict of whether the elections were fair or not. The most important aim was to restore peace and unity in Kenya.
The main point of disagreement was the fight for power. Raila wanted to be the president and was sure of going to win the elections and this did not turn out to be what he expected. On the other hand, Kibaki was not willing to step down from the presidency in order to save the lives of Kenyans.
However, negotiations were made and the two conflicting parties came to a consensus. The United Nations intervened in the situations and sent an arbitrator to try and resolve the conflict in the country. The situation was stabilized and the coalition government took shape with Kibaki as the president while Raila became the prime minister as an appeasement. A power-sharing deal was signed with the two parties; the government and opposition shared the power in a 50-50 deal.
