Question
Case study on Employee Compensation Sharon is a new Human Resource Manager at Seri Idaman Hotel. She greeted Hafiz, her next interviewee. Hafiz had an excellent academic record and appeared to be just the kind of person Seri Idaman Hotel was aiming to recruit. Seri Idaman Hotel is a five star hotel currently in the process of recruiting a new Food and Beverage Assistant Manager. Based on the application form, Hafiz appeared to be the most promising candidate to be interviewed that day. He was 27 years old and had a 3.76 grade point average for his Bachelor Degree in Hotel Management. He also had 4 years of working experience as a Food and Beverage Supervisor at Rasa Sayang Hotel. The reference letters in Hafiz’s file revealed that he was both a very active and serious student during his university days. However, Sharon still has more work to do before she can finalise the right candidate. Sharon knew that discussion of rewards could be an important part of the selection interview. But since she was still new at the hotel, she was not very sure which of the benefits provided by Seri Idaman Hotel would appeal the most to Hafiz. The hotel has an excellent profit-sharing plan – 80% of profit distributions are deferred and included in each employee’s retirement account. Health benefits are also good. The hotel’s medical and dental plan pays almost 100 percent of the cost. Employees get one week of paid vacation after the first year and two weeks after two years with the hotel. In addition, there are 12 days of paid annual leave each year. Finally, the hotel encourages advanced training courses, paying for registration fees in full and often allowing time off to attend such courses during the day. From Sharon’s own experience working in Seri Idaman Hotel, she has come to know that the management do not practice proper safety practices. On her first day of work, there was an minor incident whereby one of the housekeeping staff tripped over a box and fell down and injured her left arm and now she is on long term medical leave.
Case Questions: 1. Which of the hotel’s benefits will likely appeal to Hafiz? Justify your answer. 2. In today’s work environment, suggest and explain other benefits that might be more attractive to Hafiz? Justify your answer. 3. Which of the benefits given by the Hotel and/or given in your answer to Question 2 may be converted to incentives (rewards based on performance)?
Explanation / Answer
Q1)
Hafiz is 27 year old with four years of experience. In such cases, employees seek to develop their skills and capabilities by taking additional courses and training. Thus, here the benefits that allow advanced training courses, paying for registration fees in full and often allowing time off to attend such courses during the day will most attract the Hafiz.
