Question

Quality is associated with various organizational standards institutes such as ISO 9000, Six Sigma, and Malcolm Baldridge. Annually, these institutes recognize top quality companies and organizations for quality achievement. Using the internet or any resource, identify a recent quality award winner in logistics and supply chain management and write a brief summary (1/2 page) answering who, what (describe the award), how (what they did to win the award) and why this particular organization received the quality award.

PLEASE I WANT A DETAIL ANSWER AND PLEASE DONT FORGET TO ADD REFEREANCE TO YOUR POST. THANKS

Explanation / Answer

ISO is international quality standard ISO body was started in 1947 with 157 countries signatory countries to promote the global trade among member countries. ISO was adopted by various countries through their own country specific versions such as QS 9000 by big three automobiles in the US, UK’s BS standards, and India adopted ISI standards. These standards are derived from original ISO 9000. ISO can be adapted to any business entity if the employee strength is minimum is 5 members. ISO is very general certification can be applied to any industry such as manufacturing, service, IT, ITES, R&D and govt. services etc. For e.g. Walmart, MacDonald and Fedex are successfully implemented quality systems using ISO framework to fine-tune their supply chains and able to achieve world class quality standards in their operations.

ISO standard is having 8 main sections as shown below:

1.         Scope

2.         Normative Reference

3.         Terms & Definitions

4.         Quality Management System

5.         Management Responsibility

6.         Resource Management

7.         Product Realization

8.         Measurement, Analysis & Improvement

First three are more of definitions, reference, terminologies and procedures related to ISO 9000 standards and remaining 5 clauses are essential for an organization to implement quality in the organization. Quality management system is reference document and the quality team needs to focus on QMS document before implementing the quality standard. Training the stakeholders of the organization is done on different clauses as explained in QMS.

Some important clauses related to manufacturing and services industries are listed below:

ISO is the base for many quality initiatives in the organization such as TQM implementation, six sigma projects etc. Once ISO system is built, the company can go for different certifications with little modifications and QMS is almost same for any quality certification. ISO 9000 gives a solid foundation for TQM implementation. The success of TQM implementation is built on ISO implementation and helps companies to implement similar criteria under Malcolm Baldridge award.

All above-mentioned companies focused on above mentioned main clauses such as customer focus, product realization, resource management and measurement, analysis and improvements. These companies built robust quality systems using ISO 9000 framework. Fedex even got Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award (MBNQA) for successful implementation of TQM initiatives.
