1. A dog breeder would like to breed Alaskan huskies that run faster, but she does not know the heritability of running speed. She measures the running speed of 100 huskies, and mean running speed is 10.7 m/s. You pick 20 huskies with the fastest running speed to breed. Their mean running speed is 12.6 m/s. The offspring of these huskies have average running speed of 11.1 m/s. What is heritability of running speed in the breeder's dog population? Show all your work.
2. Describe what happens to the mean and variance of a trait under directional, stabilizing, and disruptive selection. Give one (real, not hypothetical) example of each.
Explanation / Answer
average running speed (100 huskies)= 10.7 m/s (Unselected)
average running speed (20 fast huskies) = 12.6 m/s (before selection)
avg running speed of F1 = 11.1 m/s (after selection)
hertiability is given by following equation,
h2 = R/S
where R - response to selection, given by population mean before selection
S - mean of offspring of selected parents after one generation of selection
so,
S = selected - unselected = 12.6- 10.7 = 1.9
Mean of offspring = 11.1 - 10.7 = 0.4
therefore the estimate of h2 = 0.4 /1.9 = 0.2105
