Question

In 7 days the patient recieves:

Amino Acids= 420g
Glucose=2600 g
Lipids= 700g

How do you determine the kcals? I'm assuming I multiply a number × the added total of g..but how to I determine or know what that unknown number is?

(Unknown#) × (420g + 2600g + 700g)

A patient receives all her nutrition from fluids given through the vena cava. Every 12 hours 750 mL of a solution that is 4 (m/v) amino acids (protein) and 25 (m/v) glucose (carbohydrate) is given along with 500 mL of a 10 (m/v)lipid (fat)

Explanation / Answer

t = 12 h, i.e. 0.5 days

V = 750 mL of:

4% m/V amino acids

mass of proteins = C*V = 4/100*750 = 30 g of proteins per 0.5 days

per 7 days = 7/0.5*30 = 420 g of protein

for glucose:

mass of glucose = C*V = 25/100*750 = 187.5 gof glucose per 0.5 days

per 7 days = 187.5*7/0.5 = 2625 g of glucose in 7 days

finally

mass of lipids = C*V = 10/100*500= 50g of lipids in 0.5 days

in 7 days --> 0.5*7 = 700 g of lipids

then...

caloric content:

1 g of glucose = 4 Cal --> 420 * 4 1680 Cal

1 g of protein = 4 Cal --> 2625 *4 = 10500 Cal

1 g of lipids = 9 Cal --> 9 * 700 = 6300 Cal

Total Q = 1680 + 10500+ 6300 = 18480Cal

note that 1 Cal = 1 kcal
