In 7-8 Paragraph Please describe the various channels that are involved in nervous conduction. Are they selective for specific ions? What causes them to open? If you blocked the channel, how would it affect the conduction of the action potential. 1 citation please. In 7-8 Paragraph Please describe the various channels that are involved in nervous conduction. Are they selective for specific ions? What causes them to open? If you blocked the channel, how would it affect the conduction of the action potential. 1 citation please.Explanation / Answer
The ion channels involved in nerve conduction are,
These channels are specific for their ions.
Neuron are in negative concentration gradient. There are more positive charged ions outside than inside. This give rise to resting membrane potential which is around -70mV.
During depolarization phase of action potential, voltage gated sodium channels open and there is a net movement of positively charged sodium ions into the cell. The inside of the cell becomes positively charged and the action potential is initiated.
When the action potential reaches -30mV, the voltage gated sodium channels close and potassium channels open. Potassium ions move out of the cell during repolarization phase of action potential.
As potassium channels remain open, cells loses positive charge and reaches a potential lower than the resting membrane potential. This phase is called hyperpolarization. In this phase, potassium channels close and Na/K pump is activated to restore the cell to resting membrane potential.
When these ion channels are blocked, the nervous action potential cannot be generated and propogated. This results in paralysis as that which occurs during certain poisoinings and animal bites.
