potassium soap + NaCl -----> sodium soap + KCl

-----------------------

1) What exactly constitutes a simple soap? ***(Not sure how to answer this one)***

2) What was the name of the base used to saponify the fat in this experiment? KOH

3) What was the name of the alcohol was produced following the saponification of the lard? Glycerol

4) Explain how the potassium soap you initially made was converted into sodium soap? I know Na ion replaces the K ion but not sure how to word it out.

5) What functional group is prevalent in fats (triglycerides)? Ester group

6) What major type of biomolecule is a triglyceride (do not say fat)? Lipids

Explanation / Answer

2) KOH

3) Glycerol (Propane - 1,2,3-triol)

4) Potassium salt of carboxylic acid is liquid soap, to get the solid, opaque soap it is required to convert the potassium soap to sodium soap.

5)Ester functional group is present in fats.

6) Lipids
