Question

An airplane is pressurized to 65mmHG, which is the atmpsphericpressure at a ski resort at 13000 ft altitude. a. If air is 21% oxygen, what is the partial pressure ofoxygen on the plane? b. If the partial pressure of oxygen drops below 100mmHG,passengers become drowsy. If this happens, oxygen masks arereleased. What is the total cabin pressure at which oxygen masksare dropped? Explanation / Answer

we will use the formula: ( Partial Pressure ) = ( Hole Pressure ) x ( Potion of the gas/ 100 )
a. Patial Pressure = P    Hole Pressure = 65    Portion = 21/100 = 0.21 so .. P = 65 x 0.21 = 13.65 mmHg
b.  Patial Pressure = 100 mmHg    Hole Pressure = P2    Portion = 21/100 = 0.21 so .. 100 = P2 x 0.21 so .. P2 = 476.2 mmHg
